Workshops for 2008

These workshops can fill quickly, so you are encouraged to register as soon as possible to reserve your space. Register online in a secure platform by clicking on the "Buy Now " button for your desired workshop or workshops. Should you perfer to register online, our secure online payment option (PayPal) will charge a 2.9% processing fee. NOTE: When you make a "DEPOSIT" for a workshop, PAYPAL will indicate it as "A DAY".
PROGRAM: Unless you have been notified to the contrary, classes will meet from 9am to 4pm with a one-hour lunch break. All classes will be held at The La Veta School of the Arts, 105 W. Ryus, across from the park. MATERIALS: You will be sent a materials list when you register for a class. Some classes may have a modest materials fee.
MEALS: Reasonably priced sandwiches and salads may be ordered daily and will be delivered. No host dinners can be arranged upon request. ACCOMMODATIONS: A listing of places to stay will be sent upon request when you register for classes. This list will include local B&B's, hotels, inns and some local housing at reasonable rates. Using tools, charcoal and paint, you will explore mark-making, paint possibilities, making sense of nonsense, trusting your own vision and the psychology of line, form and color. You will also begin to learn the language of abstraction. No experience necessary. Materials $40-$80 depending on what you already have.

Sumi-e Painting

" Learn technique and then dispense with it . " A few bold brush strokes render leaves, flower petals, grasses , branches and all manner of wildlife. This class will begin with a short explanation of the origins of Sumi- e painting and the materials needed . By the second day , students will be using rice paper and making beautiful paintings . The lab fee will pay for all the materials needed for this class . Sumi-e Painting - Rachael Dimond Rachael Dimond studied Sumi-e painting in New York City with Paul Siudzinski . She continues in her Colorado studio creating Sumi -e , beadwork and weaving . She also has experience with life drawing and design having worked in the art departments of various art magazines including Vogue.


 

Block Printing Without A Press

Using water based inks and "easy carve " Styrofoam blocks, this workshop simplifies the elements of block printing . The class will include how to register prints using a simple jig and will explore traditional printing as well as the less traditional reduction print. The inks provide many of the surprise elements of painting in watercolor . This creative process is user - friendly , affordale and fool-proof . The lab fee covers the cost of all required supplies . Traditional Watercolor

Learn basic watercolor techniques as you create a landscape painting. Drawing skills, landscape perspective, tips on how to create strong compositions, understanding color temperatures and values, as well as how to use the specific materials involved are explored. Sculpturing the Buddha

The focus of this 5-day class will be to create your own personal Buddha, with historical reference . The sculpture can function as a meditative image or a decorative work of art . Oil based clay will be used so that larger pieces can be completed after the five day session . Students will build their own armatures the first day. Sculpting the Buddha - Joan Hanley Joan Hanley was a painter and illustrator for twenty years when she reevaluated her art. Hanley then enrolled in the Art Institute of Chicago's art school, where she studied sculpture for the next 3 years. Her freedom to move back and forth between painting and sculpture has altered her approach to both media. In 2003, she established the Joan Hanley Fine Art Gallery in La Veta. CO.

Stained Glass

In this three day class you will produce your own art glass window. You will use the tools and design techniques of the foil method developed by CL Tiffany. You will also learn the lead came method and develop an appreciation for the color and light potential of the medium. Materials will be furnished by the instructor with the cost dependent on how much you use. Stained Glass - Jill Schwarz Jill Schwarz received a degree in Fine Arts from Fort Lewis College in Durango, CO. She also completed a 3 year apprenticeship in Architectural Art Glass and set up her own studio in 1981. She has glass pieces in private collections as well as businesses and churches nationwide. She studies Sacred Geometry principles and has taught art classes for 28 years.
 

 

Water Media

See how paint reacts to different paper surfaces. For instance, some paper absorbs pigment, others float color or react best to dry brush . Explore, experiment and complete works of art for five days . Learn hbw to develop a painting and know when to stop . The last afternoon class will take place at Joan's studio. Kinetics

Learn how natural forces such as wind , gravity . and hand movement are used in the creation of art . It is not just bridge and airplane designers who are concerned about how forces interact with objects, but artists as well. You will create your own kinetic sculptures by identifying and capitalizing on these natural forces . Must have some familiarity with hand and power tools. Kinetics - Kenny Schneider Kenny Schneider has a Bachelor's degree in art from the University of Miami in Coral Gables , FL , and a Master's Degree in art from Adams State College in Alamosa, Co. He has taught art at Colorado State University in Pueblo, CO , Trinidad State Jr. College in Trinidad, CO and Western Connecticut State University in Danbury, CN. His Public Works projects are known world-wide.
 

 

Navajo Weaving

Refresh your creative spirit with the tranquil art of Navajo Weaving . While instructing and demonstrating, Lynda. a Master Navajo weaver , will share her personal stories and experiences , allowing participants to gain fascinat­ing insights into the ancient and contemporary worlds of Navajo weaving. Navajo his­tory , culture spirituality and weaving taboos will also be discussed along the way . Both beginning and intermediate students are welcome. All looms will be warped , weaving tools and weft yarn will be furnished. Navajo Weaving - Lynda Teller Pete Lynda Teller Pete was is a fifth-generation Navajo Weaver from the Two Grey Hills area on the Navajo Reservation in New Mexico . Her specialty is Two Grey Hills Tapestries. She has won two first place Blue Ribbons at the Santa Fe Indian Market for her Navajo Tapestries. Lynda has been teaching many years , keeping the weaving tradition alive in her family.


 

Fused Glass

This fused glass class will meet all day Saturday and Sunday afternoon. Saturday'S class will focus on scoring glass and creating smaller jewelry pieces such as pins , buckles , pen­dants and earrings . Sunday afternoon's class will focus on creating cuff bracelets . Materials will be furnished by the instructor with your cost dependent on what you use . Class limited to 7. Fused Glass - Lisa Harder Lisa Harder has been teaching both stained glass and fused glass for nine years. She has done commissioned work for Texas Tech University and has had pieces in galleries in Taos , NM and Pueblo , Co . She has participated in juried shows winning many awards.

Stone Carving

Learn basic techniques of carving stone, and create a small Colorado Yule sculpture . Learn to identify different types of carving stones and the techniques for carving them . A large variety of carving tools will be provided for hands on instuction. You can bring your own stone or purchase it from the instructor ahead of time. A lab fee of $50 will include a grinder and mask. Stone Carving - Jim Fowler Jim Fowler studed art at the Sir John Cass School of Art in London, the American University in Paris and the University of Texas. Since 1969 he has worked in Southern Colorado as a sculptor, Painter, Stone Carver, and metal Fabricator. His public artworks can be seen in Frisco, CO and in Grand Junction, CO.
